Buckley Community Mourns Loss of High School Student After Car Accident

A Northern Michigan community is grieving a high school student’s life taken too soon.

Gavin Luther was driving Saturday night when he got into a rollover crash.

The three passengers survived, but Gavin did not.

The deadly accident happened on Jewell road near Ramsay road in Grand Traverse County.

One boy from Buckley Schools is currently at Munson with a broken ribs and bruised spine.

He is expected to recover.

Two other teen girls from Elk Rapid Schools have been released from the hospital.

17-year-old Gavin Luther is gone today.

He died in a rollover crash this weekend.

Close friends and the Buckley Community are mourning the loss of the Buckley high school junior.

Demian Allen and Dillon Hankins have both known Gavin for years.

“I will miss him. He was a great friend. He was very protective of his friends and family. He would be there for anything you needed him for,” said Allen.

“He was a loving and caring guy. He put the biggest smile on everyone’s faces,” said Hankins.

On Monday, the school shared memories of Gavin and celebrated his life.

“We have local counselors, local pastors and we put a memorial wall up,”said Todd Kulawiak, Buckley Community Schools principal. “We have cards for kids to write out not only for Gavin, but for the other student.”

Gavin loved hunting and fishing — anything outdoors.

And Monday the school wore camouflage in his memory.

“I’ve talked to my friends and we’ve shared stories of Gavin,” said Hankins. “We try not to talk about the accident. We try to talk about positive things.”

Friends set up a memorial for Gavin where the accident happened on Jewell Road.

“It shows how many people cared about him. It didn’t take much to know he was loved throughout the community,” said Hankins.

But what everyone will miss most about Gavin is how he could make anyone… smile.

“I’ll miss his smile and his laugh— everyone remembers him for that. He had a laugh that would put a smile on everyone’s face,” said Hankins.

Public visitation for Gavin is this Friday at 11 a.m. inside the Buckley High School big gym.

Funeral proceedings start once that is done at one.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the Gavin Luther Memorial.
