Gas Main Leak Temporarily Closes US-31

“We’re going to work very hard to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

A Grand Traverse County road under construction is back open tonight after a gas main break.

All lanes on US-31 were closed for about 3 hours, this morning.

The leak happened between 3 and 4 mile roads.

Construction on that road started last week.

The project runs from 3 mile to Holiday road.

During construction the road is down to two lanes.

In tonight’s top story, 9 & 10’s Brittany Wright joins us live with more details on what happened.

Traffic is flowing again through the area, but this morning that was not the case.

DTE Energy worked to repair the leak.

Emergency crews were also at the scene just in case.

The regional manager for DTE Energy tells me construction crews were preparing to dig in the area when they struck a gas line.

The road had to be shut down while crews dug on the part of the road where traffic would normally drive.

They were able to shut off the gas supply only on the portion of the pipe that was damaged, so no one in the area was affected.

Rawlings says there are a lot of utilities along this roadway.

“Very happy that this turned out safely and everybody will be going home and enjoying their family as they did the previous evening, so, we’re glad there was no other damaged and no injury to speak of.”

It’s been years since the road has been worked on.

He says crews are working very carefully to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.
