A Failed Culvert Shuts Down Road Indefinitely
A failed culvert under a road in Osceola County prompted the road commission to shut it down indefinitely.
70th Avenue is closed between M-115 and 20 mile road in Highland Township.
The road commission says problems with the culvert first started last summer.
They implemented a temporary fix, but an inspection last week showed that a big chunk of the culvert has broken away, allowing water to wash out on to the ground around it.
The road commission manager says this can happen when these structures get old.
“It’s an old structure, concrete cracks like anything else, just like someones driveway. Anytime there’s water that gets into it freezes, opens it up. It’s just a difficult environment. “
The road commission expects the project to cost more than $375,000.
