Pickup Collides With Motorcycle, Drives Off and Catches on Fire

A motorcycle was found wedged underneath a burning pickup truck early Tuesday morning in Montcalm County.

Montcalm County Sheriff’s deputies and the Howard City Fire Department responded to a vehicle on fire around 12:15 a.m. on Church Road, east of Amy School Road in Reynolds Township.

Crews discovered a motorcycle wedged underneath the pickup truck while extinguishing the fire.

Deputies were still at the scene of the pickup truck fire when they received a call of a motorcycle crash at the intersection of M-82 and US-131.

Troopers found the male driver of the motorcycle at the scene, but did not find his motorcycle.

Police say the pickup truck involved in the fire crashed with the motorcycle at M-82 and US-131 and drove off, dragging the motorcycle with it until the truck caught on fire and stopped on Church Road.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 58-year-old Howard City man, was transported to Spectrum hospital in Grand Rapids for treatment. The extent of his injuries are unknown.

The 43-year-old driver of the pickup truck and his passenger were not injured. The driver, Jeremy Gard, of Stanwood, was arrested and taken to the Montcalm County Jail.

Gard is charged with operating while intoxicated and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death.
