FF: ‘Canstruction’ Teams Rewarded, Needy Families Served

Father Fred’s ‘Canstruction’ event wrapped-up in Traverse City Friday night with a ceremony honoring those who gave their time to the cause.

For the fourth year — 13 teams built sculptures made entirely out of canned food — and Friday those sculptures were judged.

The winner will go on to compete at the national level but everyone who participated took something home — and organizers say that, in this case, everyone’s a winner.

“There’s some pretty creative structures,” said Father Fred’s Executive Director Deb Haase. “It’s amazing to me how some of these are standing. But the bottom line is that people in need will benefit from this.”

The Consumers Energy truck sculpture took 1st place.

Over all — more than 10 pallets worth of canned goods were collected and will go on to feed needy families.
