Northern Michigan skiers & teams win State Titles

Northern Michigan is ski destination and it showed in Monday’s MHSAA ski state finals.

The Petoskey boys won a fifth consecutive team crown, and 16th in program history at the Division 2 finals at Nub’s Nob in Harbor Springs. Harbor Springs took home the team title on the girls side of the equation.

The Traverse City West girls won a Division 1 team title at Boyne Highland.

Cadillac’s Keenan Cooper was able to defend one of his individual titles.  Cooper finished third in the Giant Slalom but took first place in the Slalom.

“I made a little mistake in my first run,” Cooper said.  “It wasn’t a very clean run.  I went out there and just tried to throw it down and ended up right in the mix of everyone.  So the second run I went up there and tried to ski it clean and did what I needed to do.  I had a little bobble at the bottom but made some moves and got right back on it and finished strong.”

Ben Hicks took the Giant Slalom crown away from Cooper when the Elk-Rapids/St. Francis Co-Op skier finished with a combined time of 52.30 seconds.

“It feels great, it feels awesome, it’s something I have been working on for years,” Hicks said.  “I’m happy I can relish it with my family and friends here and it’s a really special day for me.”

Petoskey’s Mitch Makela finished second in the Giant Slalom with Nate Houk of Cadillac taking home fifth place.

Carlee McCardell has won the Division 2 girls Giant Slalom each of the last two years but the third time was not a charm for the Elk Rapids/St. Francis Co-Op skier.  She finished in second place with Petoskey’s Kelly Leavy also medaling.  Leavy finished fifth in the Slalom.

In Division 1, Maggie Dutmers paced the Traverse City Central girls in the Giant Slalom with a third place finish.  Morgan Culp finished fourth overall for Traverse City West.

Kitt Hornbogen gave the Titans their best finish in the Girls Slalom by placing fourth overall.  Dutmers finished 10th for TC Central in the Slalom.

In the Division 1 Boys Slalom, Lars Hornburg finished 2nd overall for Traverse City Central.  Austin Skibowski placed 8th overall for Traverse City West.

In the Division 1 Boys Giant Slalom, Skibowski finished 10th for the Titans.  Hornburg placed 12th in the Slalom for the Trojans.
