First Responders Honored for Deadly I-94 Pileup Help

State leaders are honoring the first responders that helped in the massive I-94 pileup.

Speed and driver behavior during snowy conditions are blamed for the deadly 193 car pileup along a stretch of the highway in Kalamazoo County last month.

One man died, and dozens more were taken to the hospital.

Friday, those that helped on the scene were honored.

The director of the Michigan Department of Transportation Kirk Steudle said they had a plan and it was executed.

But there’s more work to be done in order to make the stretch of highway safer for drivers.

“We’re going to bring in some engineering and safety experts from the Federal Highway Administration,” says Steudle.

Steudle also said the department plans at looking at weather patterns to see which areas of I-94 are hit the hardest with snowy conditions.
