Wildlife Advocates Petition to Reclassify Gray Wolves

Wildlife advocates are asking federal officials to reclassify gray wolves as a threatened species in order to keep some protection on wolves.

The animal is considered endangered in most of the lower 48 states, which is a more protective classification than threatened.

Lawmakers from the Western Great Lakes including Michigan have proposed lifting federal protections altogether in their states, putting wolves under state control.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it will review the petition.
