UPDATE: Explosion Ignites Mecosta County Pork Business Fire, Burned Man Recovering
A major barn and business caught fire Monday morning in Mecosta County.
Central dispatch confirms someone was hurt and the fire sparked from some kind of explosion.
Calls for help started coming in around 10:00 Monday morning from High Lean Pork Farm near Remus. Hundreds of pigs were killed in the fire.
One employee was burned and taken to the hospital. The farm manager says the man had first degree burns on his hands, neck and ears, and second degree burns on his hands. The man is responding well and is expected to make a full recovery in the next two weeks.
There are at least a dozen tank trucks using the irrigation system on the farm to haul water to the fire. Cold and very windy which won’t make fighting a fire this size easy.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
9&10’s Eric Lloyd and photojournalist Jeff Blakeman were there as the flames were put out and have more details.
