Manistee Approves City Deer Cull

Some police officers in Manistee County will soon be hunting deer.

A deer cull was approved by the Manistee City Council Tuesday night. The issue has been debated for years.

The decision means Manistee Police Officers can shoot up to 50 deer from January 5 to February 5.

The police chief says deer in the area have become real nuisance.

Two officers will be assigned to hunt for the month and can use bows and firearms.

The chief says the city will have to reassess after this first hunt.

Harvested deer meat will be made available to people in the community on a first come first served basis.

The department also plans to give some to the Salvation Army to help needy families.
