Wings excited to see the best of Weiss

TRAVERSE CITY –  It may work as a delayed addition.

The Detroit Red Wings big splash in free agency two years ago was inking Center Stephen Weiss.

He was a top center for the Florida Panthers for years but a sports hernia injury really hampered his initial season with the Wings.

However, Weiss is back at Centre Ice in Traverse City and skating with his teammates at training camp.

“I’m honestly just happy to be back on the ice,” Weiss said.  “That could have went the other way and could have really taken a toll on the rest of my career to be honest.  To be able to get back on the ice in the summer and skate without any pain and to have that continue into camp has been wonderful for me.”

Weiss was originally expected to give Detroit a boost on their second line and Red Wings Captain Henrik Zetterberg is looking forward to seeing the old Weiss wearing the Winged Wheel this season.

“What he did in Florida is pretty impressive,” Zetterberg said.  “How he played and how he carried that team and just to have a healthy Weiss here for us is going to be a big difference.

Sunday features the Red and White game at Centre Ice Arena at noon.
