Lake County Libraries At Risk Without Passage of Millage

Three libraries in Lake County could see big changes if a millage fails next week.

The people will decide whether to fund a millage to keep the libraries alive on Tuesday.

The money is for libraries in Luther, Baldwin, and Chase Township.

The .25 mill would generate about $133,000 and would be split amongst all three locations based on population. That’s about $12 for the average Lake County homeowner.

If the millage does not pass, all three libraries could become a thing of the past.

While the libraries would get the vast majority of the millage funding, the law requires that a small portion of the millage paid by those in downtown Baldwin would go to the Baldwin Downtown Development Authority. Another small portion would go to the Lake County Land Bank Fast Track Authority.

9&10’s Breelynn Martin and Photojournalist Melvin Kimbrough spoke to the libraries and community members about the millage.
