Leelanau County Man Accused of Having, Giving Out Child Porn

This Leelanau County man accused of having and sharing child pornography.

It’s a case that has a neighborhood shaken.

The months-long investigation culminated in a search of Michael Burr Junior’s home.

Police said Burr unknowingly shared child porn with an investigator back in May.

Tuesday, Burr’s Elmwood Township home was searched.

Computers and cell phones were seized and he was arrested.

Burr’s arrest has been a joint investigation between the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI.

It’s a startling case to people in the area.

“I’m a little taken back because it’s right here,” said Nikki Johnson, mother.

Nikki Johnson lives down the street from Michael Burr Junior.

“The neighborhood is very quiet and very friendly. People wave when they go by and everybody drives really slow,” said Johnson.

According to court documents, Burr sent videos unknowingly to officers through a file sharing program back in May.

He’s now charged with four counts of having and sharing child pornography, and one count of using a computer to commit a crime.

The Sheriff doesn’t believe Burr made any of the materials himself.

“At this particular time we feel like he was in possession of the videos and he was distributing the videos. We don’t know if he was involved further than that, we suspect not,” said Sheriff Mike Borkovich, Leelanau County.

The Sheriff said this is a great reminder to be aware of those around you.

“We’re asking the public to stay vigilante. We hear of cases where people are captive for years in home and we’re always asking people to pay attention to details in your community,” said Sheriff Borkovich.

The Sheriff would not comment on whether or not children seen in the materials were from Northern Michigan.
