UPDATE: Alger County Roadside Park Reopened

A popular Upper Peninsula roadside park is back open after closing Tuesday because of problems with bears.

The Michigan Department of Transportation temporarily closed Deer Lake Roadside Park along M-28 at Shelter Bay in Alger County.

The DNR was unsuccessful in trapping and relocating the bear who have been getting into garbage containers.

The DNR is asking local landowners to put traps near the roadside park on private land, leaving the park open.

It’s a spot that’s typically full of swimmers, fishermen and picnickers traveling along Lake Superior.

Residents who experience trouble with bear on private property should contact the nearest DNR office for help. If anyone spots a bear at the Deer Lake Roadside Park should call the DNR’s 24-hour hotline at 800-292-7800.
