US Says Russia Violated Nuclear Treaty

The U.S. says the Kremlin broke an important nuclear treaty.

The U.S. says Russia tested missiles, which goes against the 1987 Nuclear Missile Treaty.

The deal was considered a turning point during the Cold War.

The weapons are reportedly ground-launched, intermediate range cruise missiles.

In addition to the new accusations, the administration is ready to slap Russia with tougher sanctions for helping rebel forces in Ukraine.

“While the Russians have said they want to de-escalate the conflict, their actions have not shown a shred of evidence that they really have the desire to end the violence and end the bloodshed,” said Secretary of State John Kerry.

The European Union is also considering new sanctions against Russia for its role in Ukraine.

If EU ministers approve those sanctions, the U.S. is expected to do the same.
