Opening Night for Traverse City Film Festival

It’s quickly become a tradition, the 10th annual Traverse City Film Festival is underway tonight.

The movies started, the opening celebration party has begun, and the week is all set to go.

New events this year mean even more to celebrate for the 10th year of the film festival.

“I am really excited about this tonight, 10 years, I don’t know if I would have predicted this 10 years ago,” said Michael Moore, Co-founder of the Traverse City Film Festival.

The Co-founder of The Traverse City Film Festival, Michael Moore, was taking everything in on the opening night at the state theatre, happy to see its success.

“We started with 34 films I think the first year, we have 234 this year, we’ll have over 130,000 admissions just this week,” said Moore.

Set up is underway for the opening night celebration with the first ever old hollywood theme, but there’s another event some people are headed to tonight that’s brand new and it’s featured on the water.

“We’re also kicking off movies on a boat tonight, which is a new thing were doing this year,” said Susan Fisher, Business Director for the Traverse City Film Festival. “Which were loading up 40 happy people on the Nauti-Cat and were shipping them out to the middle of the bay and showing them a movie, were doing that every night.”

The festival is also adding another venue, offering more chances to see movies.

“Free movies all day, that’s at inside out gallery, so we set that up to make it so everyone can go see films,” said Fisher.

The growth of the festival and new features is what keeps people coming back, and bringing new people in.

“I’ve been here every year since it started the very first year and watch it grow and expand and become really an event to be present for,” said Lori Hansen-Riegel, a Traverse City Film Festival attendee. “That’s one of the great things about the film festival, is that there are venues that offer free things like the open space, it’s available and accessible to everyone and that’s really important.”
