Officers Learn Drug Testing Techniques

Dozens of officers are learning on how to test for drugs out on the road.

This week, 120 officers are being trained on drug testing kits.

They are learning how to identify different narcotics and then matching the kit to the appropriate substance.

Trainers say the drug kits can be used as probable cause for an arrest, which police can use during court testimony.

“It saves a lot of time for our lab personal,” said Frank Keck, Michigan State Police. “There are many cases all over Northern Michigan, so having those officers coming to testify as preliminary examinations allows lab personal to continue doing their work.”

The training runs through Thursday.
