UPDATE: Lapeer County Dog Owners Accused of Murder

UPDATE: August 1

A downstate couple charged with second-degree murder will remain in jail on bond.

The couple’s two dogs mauled and killed a jogger on July 23rd, in Lapeer.

They went before a judge today to learn their charges.

While there, they agreed to euthanize the two cane corso dogs, plus a third of the same breed.

Bond is set at $500,000.

Eight puppies that also belonged to the couple will be turned over to an animal rescue group.


July 25

Police in Lapeer County say the owner of the dogs that killed a jogger could be charged.

Craig Sytsma was attacked Wednesday by two dogs in Metamora Township.

Police say he died of his injuries at a hospital.

The law says an owner of a dog that kills someone could face involuntary manslaughter or other charges in an attack.

The dogs are at the Lapeer County Animal Shelter.
