Local Cherry Farmer Welcomes Assistance From USDA

Local fruit farmers hit by 2012’s frost and freeze are welcoming assistance recently announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The new disaster relief funding was announced on Tuesday.

The program, which is part of the farm bill, will make funds available to farmers who didn’t have access to insurance and had losses from frost and freeze.

Shooks Farms in Central Lake was impacted by the cold snap and says the program is something they will probably pursue.

Growers can apply for assistance from July 22-Sept. 22.

Qualified growers can receive up to $125,000.

9&10’s Breelynn Martin and Photojournalist Melvin Kimbrough spoke with Shooks Farms about the assistance.
