IIHS Announces Best Used Vehicles for Teens

A new crash test report may have you thinking twice before giving your teen the keys to a used car.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says parents are sticking to a budget, instead of considering what’s safest.

They just released the vehicles that are considered “best choices.”

The best choices, under $20,000 include the Saab 9-5 sedan from 2010, the Toyota Prius V 2012, and the Honda CRV 2012. These models are best choices from the specified year or newer.

Vehicles ranked good choices starting under $10,000 include the 2009 Mercury Sable, the 2009 Subaru Legacy and the Nissan Rogue 2008 and newer.

The used vehicles providing the most protection in crashes are bigger and have safety features which include electronic stability control.

“It helps the driver maintain control of a vehicle when they’re going around a curve or they’re on a slippery road, and they begin to lose the control. Electronic stability control reduces the risk of a fatal single vehicle crash by about half,” said Ann McCartt of IIHS.
