Woman Found in Benzie County Brush Fire Identified
The Benzie County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman who was found in a brush fire over the weekend.
Investigators say they identified the woman as Connie Anthony, 58, through fingerprints. She lived in close proximity to where her body was found. They are still awaiting autopsy results to help figure out what may have happened to her.
Fire crews responded to a wooded area behind a subdivision near Lamb Road and US-31 in Benzie County on Sunday evening. While putting the fire out, they found who has now been identified as Anthony.
The sheriff’s department still does not know the circumstances surrounding her death.
So far, investigators have determined the fire was deliberately set, but it’s still not clear if someone else set the fire or if the victim started it.
According to the sheriff, lighters were found near the scene, but they were also found in areas surrounding the fire location.
As far as her body, the sheriff says there were no obvious signs of blunt trauma or foul play such as a bullet or knife wound. They did see a scar on her body, which suggests she recently had surgery.
An autopsy is being performed on her body, preliminary reports are expected soon.
Her death remains under investigation.
