Beach Bums All-Star Rhodes overcomes time away from the game

TRAVERSE CITY – Three Beach Bums are All-Star bound.  They have hopped on a plane and headed south to Sauget, Illinois which a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri.

This is the first Frontier League All-Star Game for Bums Closer DJ Johnson, Starting Pitcher Casey Delgado and Catcher Jake Rhodes.

We featured stories about Johnson and Delgado on our weekend shows.  Today, we focus on Rhodes.

What makes his berth into the All-Star Game even more fascinating, is that he was not playing baseball last year.  Rhodes was coaching.

Now he leads the team in Batting Average and if he would be among the league leaders if he had enough at-bats to qualify.

However Rhodes does not think his performance at the plate has made him an All-Star.

“I’ve always took a little more pride in how I do behind the plate than how I do hitting,” Rhodes said.  “If I had a bad game hitting, but I did well defensively, it always kind of for me, overshadowed how I did at the plate.  Defense wins championships.”

The Frontier League Home Run Derby is Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark which is the home of the Gateway Grizzlies.  The All-Star Game is Wednesday night.
