Two Horses Collapse, Die at Mecosta County Free Fair

On back to back nights, horses collapsed and died after their harness races at the fair.

Nowv veterinarians are looking into possible causes, whether malicious or coincidental.

The horse deaths happened Monday and Tuesday night during the harness races at the Mecosta County Free Fair in Big Rapids.

The fair manager says each horse collapsed after their first race during their cool down laps.

They just fell and were dead by the time anybody got out to them.

These were standard bred horses that are thought to be heartier than normal thoroughbreds, making it even more unusual.

The cause is not yet known but should be determined when blood results return.

9&10’s Eric Lloyd and photojournalist Jeff Blevins spoke to the investigating veterinarian and have more details.
