Zoning Change Allows for TC Emergency Homeless Shelter

Traverse City commissioners passed a zoning ordinance for an emergency homeless shelter.

It means a shelter will be allowed within the city limits.

A homeless shelter at the old Boys and Girls Club building could hold up to 100 beds come winter, when some people need it the most.

Those against the zoning change argued it was too close to downtown.

People supporting the shelter say it was the right thing to do, as Safe Harbor’s rotating shelters were having trouble keeping up with demand.

The new zoning ordinance allows shelters in ten different areas of Traverse City.
