Blashill leads Wings prospects, talks about extension

TRAVERSE CITY – Two years ago Jeff Blashill told Northern Michigan’s Sports Leader that he wants to an NHL Head Coach someday.

However those plans will to have to wait at least one more year, quite possibly three more years.

Blashill continues to coach the Wings AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.  Those responsibilities include running the development camp in at Centre Ice in Traverse City this week.

Red Wings GM Ken Holland told reporters earlier this offseason that NHL teams were inquiring about Blashill for their head coaching vacancies.

Holland did not give Blashill permission to talk to other teams.

In fact, Holland gave Blashill a raise and a 3-year contract extension.

Blashill told Northern Michigan’s Sports Leader why he didn’t wait one more year and test the market.

“I’ve been lucky in my life to have a lot of real good coaching jobs and I certainly enjoy the one I’m in right now,” Blashill said. We love the city of Grand Rapids, my family actually lives here in Traverse City, so we’re close to them, so there’s lots of things that make it a real enjoyable experience.  But, to be able to work for two great organizations in Detroit and with the Griffins has been a great experience for me.”

Detroit’s Head Coach Mike Babcock is entering the final year of his contract.  Both sides have told reporters that they want to work on an extension, but signing Blashill does give Detroit a little insurance going into the summer of 2015.
