Beach Bums hit trio of homers but fall to River City 7-6

TRAVERSE CITY, MI  – The Traverse City Beach Bums tied a season-high with three home runs, but the River City Rascals notched a run in the top of the ninth inning to escape with a 7-6 victory on Thursday night at Wuerfel Park.

River City held a 6-5 lead heading to the final inning and earned a huge insurance tally on a Saxon Butler RBI double scoring Eric Williams. In the bottom of the ninth, Jeff DeBlieux launched a two-out solo homer to claw the Bums to within one. It was DeBlieux’s third homer of the year. Gabrial Shaw hunkered down to strike out Yazy Arbelo, picking up his third save in as many nights.

The Rascals jumped out to an early lead, stringing together four straight singles capped off by a suicide squeeze to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Jovan Rosa got a run back immediately in the bottom of the frame for the Beach Bums, blasting a solo shot, his third, to make it 3-1.

Traverse City tied the game an inning later as Arbelo smashed a two-run double down the line scoring Greg Harisis and DeBlieux to make it 3-3. River City answered in the top of the fifth with a Josh Ludy RBI double to retake a 4-3 lead. Again the Beach Bums answered with Arbelo delivering an RBI single to even the game at four after five.

River City took the lead for good, though, in the top of the sixth, plating two runs on a Hector Crespo RBI triple and Williams groundout to open up a 6-4 lead.

Harisis cut the lead to 6-5 in the last of the seventh inning with a solo homer, his second of the year, but the Bums couldn’t catch up to take the win. The rookie outfielder finished 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, and an RBI on the night.

Tommy Organ (3-1) earned the win for the Rascals by tossing 0.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Ethan Carter, who gave up four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Tanner Tripp started for the Beach Bums, taking a no-decision while yielding four runs on six hits in five innings. Scott Vachon (0-1) gave up two runs in his only inning of work to take the loss.

Traverse City now welcomes in the Windy City ThunderBolts for the first of a three-game series on Independence Day at 7:05 p.m. Casey Delgado (5-2, 2.68) will start for the Beach Bums against the ThunderBolts’ Jake Fisher (2-6, 5.33).
