All Lanes on South Airport Rd. Now Open

Great news for South Airport road commuters! After a few days of construction, all lanes on South Airport road are now open.

The construction stretched from Veterans Drive to just west the railroad tracks.

Traffic was heavily backed up on South Airport Road and Cass Road.

“Frustrated, road rage and you just basically have to keep a positive head,” said Michael Autry, driver.

Autry is one of the many who was delayed on Thursday due the construction on South Airport Road.

The re-paving project started on Wednesday, a little later than scheduled.

“We originally hoped to have it completed at night, but we’ve had a lot of rainy nights that pushed us back,” said Garth Greenan, Grand Traverse County Traffic Services Supervisor.

And drivers like Autry were worried the construction would not be done in time for the National Cherry Festival.

“I thought it was a bad idea because you got the tourists coming up and they don’t really know any other way besides the major roads,” said Autry.

“We wanted to get it done before the National Cherry Festival, so we went to a 24-hour construction a couple days ago,” said Greenan.

It’s not only drivers that are frustrated with the construction, but nearby businesses say they have lost nearly 90 percent of their sales.

“We planned for a slower day on Wednesday,” said Anna Heiges, Wholly Daylight Donuts owner. “It has been slower, but not as slow as it was on Wednesday because our drive way was open on Thursday.”

Luckily, all the construction was done this afternoon.

“There will still be a few minor things to clean-up, but nothing that will impede traffic for the next week,” said Greenan.
