Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail Expands

A well-known trail in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is getting much bigger.

Wednesday marked the official opening of the second expansion of the Sleeping Bear Heritage trail in Leenlanau County.

The new five mile segment now connects Empire and Glen Arbor.

The trail runs through the Dune Climb, scenic drive and Glen Haven Historic Village.

Park rangers said the trail will help people see the beauty of sleeping bear in a whole new way.

“It really opens up new parts of the park to people who might not have gone to the trails,” said Tom Ulrich, National Park Service Deputy Superintendent.

There are still 17 miles left to pave. When it’s all done, the trail will have cost more than $11 million which will be funded by federal funds and private donors.
