Five Kayakers Rescued From Frigid Lake Michigan Water

The rough water yesterday on Lake Michigan forced five kayakers to be rescued, three by a passing sailboat while the other two had disappeared in the high waves.

But within an hour, a US Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Traverse City was able to find and bring them aboard high above the waters of Lake Michigan between South Manitou Island and Glen Arbor.

One of the men was still in their kayak while the other was hanging on to the side in the 50 degree water.

A rescue swimmer was dropped in and brought the two up into the helicopter.

Once in the helicopter, the pilots had to get the men to the ambulance as soon as possible, especially the one that had flipped their kayak.

9&10’s Eric Lloyd and photojournalist Jeff Blevins spoke with the pilot and the rescue swimmer and have more details.
