Grand Traverse County Celebrates State Log Home Day
The state of Michigan is celebrating the existence of something commonly overlooked in the history books: log cabins.
A statewide Log Home Day swept the Mitten Sunday, opening the doors of historic buildings for people to honor.
The special day comes every year on the last Sunday in June.
In Grand Traverse County, one log cabin on the Old Mission Peninsula was held in particular regard by the community.
“The Hessler Log Cabin was actually a cabin that was built on an old mission and it was located on the southern part of the peninsula and it was moved up here in 1983 by lots of volunteers,” said Anita Klein, a member of the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society.
The Hessler Cabin has celebrated Log Home Day for over 10 years, featuring live music, historical guides and reenactment actors.
