Detroit Man Leads Police on Chase Through Montcalm County

The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office received a call Wednesday afternoon for a man slumped over in his vehicle at the Bethel Lutheran Church, in Reynolds Township. A deputy and staff from the Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services were sent to check it out.

When medical personnel attempted to speak to the man, he drove off and hit another medical staff member with his vehicle. The staff member was not injured.

That sparked a search for the suspect. Deputies spotted the car on Almy Road near Amy School Road.

The man refused to pull over, leading the deputy on a chase through back roads reaching speeds of 85 miles per hour.

The Detroit man eventually pulled over on the on-ramp of northbound US-131 at M-82.

James Leichtweis was arrested on charges of running from police and an outstanding warrant for probation violation in Wayne County.

Leichtweis is charged with fleeing and eluding police fourth degree and reckless driving.
