Grand Traverse Fire Dept’s. to Discuss Possible Merge

An ongoing and controversial discussion about merging fire departments could reach a turning point soon.

Traverse City Fire and Grand Traverse Metro Fire have been considering the pros and cons of a merger for nearly three years now.

The results of a $40,000 study conducted by an emergency consultation firm are back and say the merger would be beneficial for helping fire fighters work faster and better.

“To bring two organizations together of this size [would] be pretty monumental effort,” said Pat Parker, fire chief at Grand Traverse Metro. “We probably could put more people on an incident quicker. If we all train together, we could be more effective.”

A meeting is scheduled for July 1 to let departments discuss possible changes.

We’ve posted the results of the fire study here.
