MDEQ Tours Watershed of Grand Traverse Bay Projects

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality stopped by a Northern Michigan beach Friday to get an up close look at some of the work done by the Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay.

The projects include the Kids Creek restoration project and Bryant Park.

The group recently “day lighted” a section of the creek that was flowing in an underground culvert.

And at Bryant Part, they installed a storm water filtering system to improve water quality in Grand Traverse Bay.

“We want to look at some of these activities that we think can be a model for the rest of the state so we’re looking at these model activities and we’ll take them and showcase them in other parts of the state of Michigan.”

The group also toured the Four Corners Brownfield redevelopment project. Leaking underground storage tanks were found at each corner.

Cleanup work has allowed three businesses to move onto what used to be vacant land.
