Arbelo bumps Beach Bums past Otters 3-1

TRAVERSE CITY — Yazy Arbelo smacked a two-run home run in the first inning and added an RBI single later in the game to lead the Traverse City Beach Bums past the Evansville Otters 3-1 on Thursday night at Wuerfel Park.

Arbelo’s first-inning blast was a missile just to the left of dead-center field, scoring Rob Benedict, who had walked earlier in the frame to give TC a 2-0 lead. The homer was Arbelo’s team-leading seventh of the season.

With the score still 2-0 in the fifth, Arbelo poked a single through the left side, plating Jeff DeBlieux to make it 3-0. Overall, Arbelo was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI, upping his team-best total to 19.

The support was more than enough for Rusty Shellhorn, who dazzled in his third start of the year. Shellhorn (2-0) tossed 5.1 scoreless frames, scattering seven hits while racking up three strikeouts. In three starts this year, Shellhorn has given up just two earned runs in 17.1 innings.

Chuck Ghysels came on for Shellhorn with two on and one out in the sixth and appeared to give up a game-tying home run to Chris Sweeney, but the ball hugging the line was called foul. Sweeney later singled to load the bases, but Ghysels battled back to get a strikeout and groundout, stranding three runners.

Will Rankin gave up a run in the eighth on a Kolin Conner single to close the gap to 3-1, but stranded the tying runs in scoring position. D.J. Johnson picked up his eighth save of the season by closing the door in the ninth inning.

Preston Olson (2-2) got the start for Evansville and was the tough-luck loser, giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings.
