New Commanding Officer Assigned to USCG Cutter Mackinaw

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw is getting a new commanding officer.

Commander Vasilios Tasikas will take over at a ceremony Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.

It will be held at the Millard D. Olds Memorial Moorings in Cheboygan.

That’s Mackinaw’s home port.

The Mackinaw is the only U.S. heavy ice breaking vessel assigned to the Great Lakes.

The cutter also helps with search and rescue, law enforcement and deploys oil skimming systems during spills.

Previous Commander Michael Davanzo is transferring to the Afloat Training Group, Atlantic in Norfolk, Virginia. He has served in the Office of Military Justice at the Coast Guard Headquarters.
