Kalkaska County Deputy Accused of Sex Crimes with Former Inmate
A Kalkaska County Sheriff’s deputy is at the center of sex crime investigation.
Aaron Popa was arrested by Michigan State Police on Wednesday. He is accused of having sex with an inmate.
MSP says the three criminal sexual conduct charges stem from an investigation that began in February. A former female inmate from the Kalkaska County Jail reported the 2006 incident to the Otsego County Prosecutor’s office. She reported that during a transport she had sexual relations with Popa.
The Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office placed Popa on unpaid suspension while the case goes through court.
In addition to being a county deputy, Popa is the Vice President of the Kalkaska Public School Board of Education. The superintendent says he is shocked by the allegations and questions them.
The incident is still under investigation by Michigan State Police.
9&10’s Breelynn Martin and Photojournalist Jacob Johnson spoke with police and the superintendent about the arrest.
