Supreme Court to Hear Case on Free Speech in Social Media
The supreme court will take on a case arguing that violent or threatening posts on Facebook and other social media fall under the First Amendment’s right to free speech.
A Pennsylvania man was sentenced to almost four years in federal prison for posting violent rants online against his estranged wife, former coworkers, and police.
A federal appeals court rejected Anthony Elonis’ claim that the comments were protected under the first amendment.
Elonis says he never meant to hurt anyone.
The court will hear the case in the fall.
