Woman Bitten by Raccoon in Suttons Bay Twp.

The Leelenau County Sheriff’s Office responded to animal bite complaint after a 61-year-old female resident of Suttons Bay Township was bitten by a raccoon.

The incident occurred Thursday at approximately 11:00 am in the 2500 block of South Pineview Road in Suttons Bay Township.

The woman was out in her yard when a raccoon ran towards her from a wooded area. The woman attempted to fend off the raccoon by kicking at it, however it bit her right leg just above the ankle. The woman’s husband came outside with a firearm and killed the raccoon after it came after him as well.

The Sheriff’s Animal Control Deputy responded and took custody of the animal remains and took it to a local veterinarian office to have it tested for rabies.

This was very unusual behavior for a wild animal so all possible steps to protect the health of the victim will be taken. The female victim has sought medical attention for the bite.
