Mt. Pleasant headed to D-2 State Final with 7-1 win

EAST LANSING – It’s been a few years since the Oilers have been in the State Semis, but Mt. Pleasant baseball looked right at home Thursday afternoon.

The Oilers beat Gull Lake 7-1 in the Division 2 State Semifinal at McLane Baseball Stadium on the campus of Michigan State University.

Mt. Pleasant will face Richmond in the Division 2 State Final Saturday morning at 9.

The Blue Devils lost in the Division 2 Title Game last year and have won 32 consecutive games this season.

The Oilers started hot in the Semifinal Thursday.  Dean Marais drove in a pair of runs in the 1st.

In the 3rd, pitcher Hunter Buczkowski helped his cause by driving in Marais.  Joe Genia later drove in Buczkowski’s pinch runner Noah Hutchinson to put Mt. Pleasant ahead 4-0 through 3 innings.

Buczkowski drove in two more runs in the 5th, Maxwell Trucks and Joshua Epple.

The Oilers tacked on one more in 7th when Genia singled through the left side of the infield to once again score Hutchinson.

Gull Lake’s scored its lone run when a batter hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th.

Buczkowski went the distance on the hill and struck out four batters.
