Students and staff were overcome with joy as a teacher returned to school nearly two months after he was involved in a hit and run accident.

Scott Dumas is a sixth grade social studies teacher at Mason County Central Middle School and has been recovering from his injuries since April.

Investigators say Brian Blackburn hit Dumas in the parking lot of the Shop N Save near Scottville and left. Dumas sustained serious injuries in the crash. Police arrested Blackburn.

Dumas made a special appearance on Tuesday during the middle school’s annual awards ceremony, which marks the end of the year.

During the ceremony, the school took a minute to show their support and presented him with a check for all the money raised to help him and his family. They also showed him a special video.

“It felt really good to be back here today. I’ve come a long ways from when I got hit, ” said Dumas.

Dumas has not completely recovered, but is looking forward to returning to school in the fall.

Blackburn, will return to court in the next few weeks.

9&10’s Breelynn Martin and Photojournalist Jacob Johnson attended the ceremony.
