Ernst Sentenced for Lying During Emmet Co. Murder Investigation

A Northern Michigan man is going to prison for at least two years for lying to investigators when his girlfriend’s husband was killed.

John Ernst’s girlfriend killed her husband in October 2012 in Resort Township in Emmet County.

Ernst struck a deal with prosecutors when he plead guilty in March to two perjury charges. A judge sentenced him to two to 15 years in prison.

He was originally charged with seven felonies including being an accessory after the fact.

Carol Kopenkoskey had plead guilty to second-degree murder and told police that Ernst told her to get rid of the gun. She was sentenced to 18 to 35 years in prison in February.
