Feedback at 5:00: Rename Columbus Day?
Northern Michigan is a region full of Native American roots.
Now, organizers from “Idle No More Michigan” want to re-name “Columbus Day” to “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in Traverse City.
Four states and several cities have already changed the name.
Christopher Columbus discovered the new world as part of a European mission in 1492.
Opponents say Columbus forced indigenous people into slavery and the mission sparked deadly disease, which is why the group wants the name changed.
Mayor Michael Estes says he does not think the move should be under city consideration, since the city does not celebrate nor recognize the national holiday.
Do you think the name should be changed?
