Police Continue Search for Missing Chippewa Co. Woman

The search continues tonight for a missing elderly woman in Chippewa County. Police are asking for your help. The sheriff tells us Mary Virginia Kangas has been missing since noon, Tuesday.

The 83-year-old suffers from dementia. She was last seen near her home in Kinross Township. She was walking westbound near Thompson and Tilson Roads.

The sheriff says she is more likely to respond to her middle name, Virginia. But with her dementia, she may not know her name or where her home is. They also say she has a tendency to hide.

We were told Kangas is about 5’3″ tall and has gray hair. She may have glasses on and she walks with a limp. A neighbor who spotted Kangas near the cemetery around noon Tuesday tells police she was wearing a light colored or white jacket and possibly blue jeans.

The sheriff says multiple agencies searched on foot covering about 12 miles near her home Tuesday, but the search came up empty. Emergency response teams, police, and neighbors are canvassing the area and retracing every step.

Foul play is not suspected, but someone may have given her a ride.  Police say Kangas thought she had a doctor’s appointment. She had a birthday a few weeks ago and mentioned wanting to visit her daughter in Traverse City. Police were contacted there, but nothing has come up.

Family tells us that Kangas has taken rides from neighbors she does not know before. They say if someone offered her a ride, she would likely say yes.

The sheriff says it looks like the search could continue throughout the night again tonight.

If you have any information on Mary Kangas’ whereabouts, you’re asked to call 911 immediately.
