Saudi Arabia Officials Increase Count of MERS Infection Cases

An update on the Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS.

The number of confirmed MERS cases and deaths is even higher than first thought in the Middle East. Saudi state media says the kingdom has drastically increased the number of registered cases.

Today, local news agencies reported authorities have registered a total of 688 confirmed MERS infections and 282 cases resulting in death. The report shows that 53 people are still receiving treatment. The tally posted on the Saudi Health Ministry’s website prior to the new report showed 575 cases and 190 deaths.

MERS can cause symptoms including fever, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure.  There is no cure for MERS.
