Emergency Manager Accused of Several Sex Crimes in Crawford County
This Emergency Manager and 911 Director facing some serious charges tonight- police say he had child pornography.
The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department says they’ve been investigating Lawrence “Larry” Akers for the past month.
Deputies say Akers not only had child porn, but had been engaging in inappropriate acts with a teen girl for months.
Deputies arrested Akers after searching his home and work, both in Grayling.
A deputy was investigating an unrelated complaint from the victim when he uncovered text messages between her and Akers.
What detectives would uncover next would not only shock them, but those who work beside the Emergency Manager.
“There were a couple photographs of the victim that he downloaded pictures onto a flash drive and then we wanted to print them out.”
Investigators say Larry Akers brought those images to his office at the 911 Dispatch Center to print them out. They say they also found the pictures when they searched his home, where they also discovered Akers was giving his victim gifts in exchange for inappropriate acts.
“It’s an infatuation type of thing,” explained Sheriff Kirk Wakefield, “But it’s not right, and if it’s not right then you’ve got to do something about it.”
Those who worked alongside Akers, including the Sheriff, say his arrest was unexpected.
“I guess the word dumbfounded would be more appropriate, yeah, I’m still having a hard time with it, but evidence is evidence.”
Paul Compo, the Crawford County Administrator and Controller agrees, “I think we all were shocked. He’s been with Crawford County for a long time, he’s a well respected member of the community, and he’s excelled at emergency management state-wide.”
Despite being described as well-liked, many say what he’s accused of is worrisome, and has cast a new light on him.
“There’s concerns that Larry was a public employee, and as a public employee he has a responsibility of public trust, and that seems to have been broken.”
Akers also serves on the Grayling City Council as the Mayor Pro Tem.
He’s being charged with five different counts, and will face a judge for his pre-trial and pre-liminary exam in the coming weeks.
