Thieves Strike Cemetery for Second Time This Month

For the second time this month, items stolen from this Wexford County cemetery.

Earlier this month thieves took flags and flowers.

This time it was something bigger.

The Sexton at the Greenwood Township cemetery says someone broke into their vault and stole a lawnmower and weed wacker.

Many are left wondering who would do such a thing to the place where so many of their loved ones are buried.

“The vault had been broken into and we had a John Deere riding lawnmower as well as our new weed wacker missing.”

It was not the discovery Sexton Shelly Bigelow expected to make when she came to the cemetery this afternoon.

“Whoever did this, forced entry, pried the lock off and opened up the garage door for the vault,” explained Trooper Mike Vranish of the Michigan State Police.

A handle, broken off in the process, laid in the cemetery. Both Bigelow and police hope it leads them to the thief.

“Our community is pretty upset about the losses we’ve suffered. It’s really concerning because they’ve got a lot of loved ones here. Why would somebody want to hurt this place? Nobody hurts them, it’s pretty frustrating. It’s just really frustrating to think that this is a place of peace and rest. Leave it alone,” said Bigelow.

After dealing with this twice, and now facing thousands of dollars in losses- a message to whomever is responsible.

“It would be wise to just stop it’s ridiculous. What’s going on here is not proving any kind of point other than it’s really kind of foolish.”
