Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Wilderness Dedication Protects 32K Acres

This afternoon, the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will dedicate more than 32,000 acres as wilderness.

President Obama signed the bill in March to protect wildlife habitat from harmful development, while still allowing the public to enjoy beaches, trails and streams.

Developed county state roads, boat launches and several historical structures are excluded from the wilderness designation.  Hunting, fishing and camping will continue.

The public is welcome to join in today’s ceremony which begins at noon.

Park entrance fees will be waived for the day.
