Sex-Change Surgery Covered by Medicare

Transgender people receiving Medicare may no longer be automatically denied coverage for sex-reassignment surgeries.

The surgery is an effective treatment for individuals who do not identify with their biological sex.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services review board ruled the old policy is no longer justified.

This ruling does not mean all Medicare recipients are entitled to have their surgery paid for by the government. Recipients will have to have a doctor’s recommendation to seek authorization for the surgery.
