But now researchers are raising genetically modified fish.

The Atlantic salmon are altered with genetic material from a Chinook salmon and an ocean pout.

The results show a fish growing to market weight twice as fast as a wild salmon.

Researchers are waiting for FDA approval.

The agency did rule the fish as “safe.”

Opponents worry about the fish causing allergic reactions, and what would happen if one somehow ended up in the wild, wondering what could happen to the natural population.
