Bay View Association and Bear Creek Twp. Tax Dispute Continues

Tonight North Central Michigan College may decide to help fight a township tax dispute.

It’s an ongoing property tax issue between the Bay View Housing Association and the township.
The tax dispute started in 2010 when Bay View residents questioned their high property taxes. Bay View filed another appeal this year with Bear Creek Township, and are waiting on the outcome

The association says they contribute more than $1 million in property taxes each year, and as property values in the economy plummet —  their taxes keep sky rocketing.
Because it’s a seasonal association, they are taxed as a whole, and not as individual properties. There are around 447 properties in the association.

Bear Creek Township’s lawyer says the housing association is making a large claim. She says the claim made is that the property was over assessed by a value of $52 million dollars and they feel the property is only worth $20 million. She say that is what the housing assoc. will have to prove to the tax tribunal.

If the appeal succeeds, schools stand to lose more than a million dollars.

9&10’s Alyssa Gambla and photojournalist Erin Malone have more details on the tax dispute.
